About BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure based on weight and height. It provides a rough estimate of body fat and is widely used by healthcare professionals to identify potential weight problems. BMI alone doesn't diagnose health — consult a doctor for a full assessment.

Complete Guide to Body Mass Index (BMI)

What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated from a person's weight and height. Devised in the 1830s by mathematician Adolphe Quetelet, it provides a simple way to categorize individuals as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. It is used worldwide by healthcare professionals, insurance companies, and public health organizations.

BMI Formula

Metric

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²)

Example: 70 kg ÷ (1.75 m)² = 22.9

Imperial

BMI = (weight (lbs) ÷ height² (in²)) × 703

Example: (154 lbs ÷ (69 in)²) × 703 = 22.7

BMI Categories (WHO Classification)

CategoryBMI Range
Severe UnderweightBelow 16.0
Underweight16.0 – 18.4
Normal Weight18.5 – 24.9
Overweight25.0 – 29.9
Obese Class I30.0 – 34.9
Obese Class II35.0 – 39.9
Obese Class III40.0 and above

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose Units: Toggle between metric (kg/cm) and imperial (lbs/ft-in).
  2. Enter Weight: Type your weight in the selected unit.
  3. Enter Height: Type your height. Imperial uses separate feet and inches fields.
  4. View Results: Your BMI, category, healthy weight range, and visual gauge appear instantly.
  5. Optional: Enter age and gender for context — note that the standard BMI formula doesn't change based on these, but interpretation may differ.

Limitations of BMI

Doesn't Measure Body Fat Directly: BMI uses total weight, which includes muscle, bone, and water. A muscular athlete may have a high BMI despite low body fat.

Age Differences: Older adults tend to have more body fat than younger adults at the same BMI. Children and teens should use age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles instead.

Ethnic Variations: Health risks at a given BMI can vary by ethnicity. Some Asian populations may face higher health risks at lower BMI values, while some Black populations may have lower risk at higher BMIs.

Doesn't Show Fat Distribution: Abdominal (visceral) fat carries more health risk than fat stored elsewhere. Waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio provides additional insight.

Not a Diagnosis: BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment.
